The decline in physical cash has fundamentally changed how the public gives to community groups and charities. For organisations that have historically relied on collection buckets, this cashless shift presents a serious challenge: how to capture spontaneous generosity when nobody has spare change in their pockets.
While traditional card readers offer a partial solution in that they accept card payments, they often create friction when making donations in the real world. It can be awkward when they need a volunteer to manually enter the donation amount and a limited number of devices can cause queues that deter other potential donors.
Furthermore, even when people do carry cash, organisations are increasingly being charged by banks simply to handle and deposit it, which is also proving difficult with more bank branches closing.
To bridge this gap, Tipd now works with over 80 different organisations regularly receiving donations. For comparison purposes, we’ve spoken to two of our brass band organisations: The Blackburn & Darwen Band (a registered charity) and the Bearpark & Esh Colliery Band. Both bands have embraced Tipd within their fundraising strategies and they agreed to talk to the Tipd team about their experience and supply data for analysis.
In short: by deploying Tipd’s simple cashless tipping solution, both bands successfully modernised their collection process, increased their digital donation share, and ultimately raised more funds – which is what it’s all about.
Now let’s take a look into the underlying analysis.
To maximise reach, both organisations blended Tipd’s digital presence with their physical events. Instead of relying solely on roaming volunteers with card machines, they made donating a self-serve, instant process.
• Virtual Collecting Buckets: Bearpark & Esh Colliery Band effectively created "virtual collecting buckets" by placing large Tipd QR codes on roll-up banners and posters next to merchandise stands.
• Integrated Event Materials: Blackburn & Darwen Band printed Tipd links directly into their concert programmes and placed QR codes on stands near refreshment areas to capture attention in the places people were already looking.
• Targeted Social Campaigns: Bearpark & Esh expanded their fundraising window by sharing their Tipd link across Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok for targeted digital campaigns prior to the event to build awareness, and also afterwards for those who couldn’t make it in person.
By comparing year-over-year event data, the impact of adopting a frictionless digital platform became immediately clear. The data demonstrates not only an overall increase in digital giving but a strong donor preference for Tipd over traditional card readers.
• Growing the Digital Share: At a supermarket collection event, the introduction of Tipd helped the total share of cashless donations jump from approximately 9% of total takings in the previous year to nearly 14%.
• Outperforming Traditional Hardware: At the same event, although audiences had a choice of using either a traditional card reader or a Tipd QR code, Tipd captured 80% of the total cashless transaction value.
• Over 100% Increase in Digital Revenue: For Bearpark & Esh's 75th Birthday Concert, they created a social media campaign asking supporters to "buy a candle” with a donation in addition to fundraising at the event. Tipd outperformed the traditional card machine by over 100% (£237 vs £112).
• Higher Overall Yields: For Blackburn & Darwen Band, overall event revenue increased year-over-year by 9.7% (excluding ticket prices).
When organisations adopt Tipd, the advantages extend far beyond simply replacing physical cash. The platform provides a comprehensive suite of features designed to protect donation values, engage supporters, and drastically reduce administrative workloads:
• Protecting Donation Values: A major advantage of Tipd is the flexibility of its business model; the platform fee can be added on top of the donation amount and paid directly by the customer. By asking donors to cover this fee, organisations retain the full value of the intended donation. Remarkably, even with the fee passed on, supporters still demonstrated a clear preference for using Tipd’s QR codes over traditional card machines.
• Automated Gift Aid Capture: For registered charities, Tipd functions as an all-in-one donation platform equipped to process Gift Aid. The application captures Gift Aid declarations electronically at the point of donation and generates the necessary reports, completely removing the administrative friction from the claims process.
• Meaningful Donor Engagement: Tipd transforms a simple transaction into a moment of connection by allowing customers to leave a thank-you message in seconds. Treasurers noted that receiving these prompt notification emails is highly valued, offering a significant morale boost to volunteers, staff, and performers.
• Rapid Payouts and Simplified Reconciliation: Cash flow and financial transparency are critical for community groups. Tipd ensures that payouts are made directly to the organisation's bank account in just two working days. Furthermore, the platform improves reporting and transparency for treasurers and committees, making bank reconciliation a fast, straightforward process rather than a monthly headache.
The true measure of any solution is the value felt by its users. For these volunteer-led organisations, Tipd transitioned from being a simple administrative alternative to an essential fundraising asset.
"Given the amount of money that Tipd has helped us to raise in a short space of time, we would not be without it. You do need to work on promoting the platform yourself but this is very minimal compared to the rewards. The results are very impressive."
— Lindsey, Bearpark & Esh Colliery Band.
By removing the barriers to giving and embracing the increasingly cashless world, Tipd ensures that charities, community groups, and donation-dependent organisations never miss out on vital funds and better yet, can also increase their donation amounts with the right strategy.
